It's hard to dispute: The Women's March on Washington set off a movement. The women-led event became one of the largest demonstrations in modern history, and it started with people of action. Real people and professional organizers alike—mass numbers of everyday activists—came out in droves as word spread across the country, and the world. What we wanted to know was why. What motivated a reported 470,000 people? To find out, we packed up our gear, headed to D.C. from coasts east and west, and asked some of them in person: Why women?

For Women's History Month, we're looking back on the day that triggered an awe-inspiring response domestically and globally. What we learned from it is what we always knew deep down—to move forward, we must listen to each other's voices.
